Aquatics (Waterfront) Director
General Responsibility: Oversees and supervises the Waterfront program.
Qualifications: Be at least 21 years of age. Have 3 seasons of previous Waterfront experience as a lifeguard and/or Camp aquatics director. Possesses CPR for the Professional Rescuer issued by the Red Cross, or CPR certificate issued by a certifying agency determined by the State Commissioner of Health. Holds Water Safety Instructor (WSI), waterfront module training, and lifeguard certification.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Establishes and oversees activities in and on the water.
- Supervises everyone participating in aquatic activities.
- Responds to waterfront emergencies.
- Serves as lifeguard at the waterfront when needed.
- Trains waterfront and children/youth programs staff during orientation week (e.g., sweep, buddy system, emergency plans). Sets up the waterfront area, marking off swim areas, setting up buddy boards, etc.
- Ensures 1:25 staff/camper ratio on and off waterfront sites.
- Teaches campers the Red Cross Buddy System, and appropriate emergency procedures for lost Camper (Lost Swimmer Plan).
- Assigns Counselors to specific tasks at the waterfront, making sure all understand their role and responsibilities.
- Oversees all waterfront equipment; ensures each is in good working order. Reports any needed repairs or replacements to Camp Director. Requests purchase of new equipment as needed.
- Ensures all boats are in working condition, gas tanks filled daily. Tanks must be full at the end of day to be ready for the next day’s activities.
- Tests swimming ability of all campers and staff.
- Offers campers an opportunity to receive Red Cross Certification in swimming.
- Maintains a safe and clean waterfront area.
Note: Either the Waterfront Director or Assistant Waterfront Director is required to participate on overnight canoe trips.
